This week I read In a Book Club Far Away by Tif Marcelo. Purely by coincidence I had started one of the books (Much Ado About Anne) in the Mother Daughter Book Club series by Heather Vogel Frederick. Both of these books tugged on my heart strings because I have recently been feeling so alone in my reading. It encouraged met to seek out some online book clubs so there will be people out there at least reading the same book as me and wanting to chat! All of that led me to here, wanting to start a blog.
In a Book Club Far Away centers on three women who are all Army spouses: Regina, Adelaide, and Sophie. Adelaide is the character who starts the book club to connect with people at the new base and I really love that it inspires a life long friendship between the characters no matter where they are. At the time of the book club's conception, Adelaide was struggling to get pregnant and felt like the book club gave her a sense of contentment and a life more fulfilled. Regina had just gotten pregnant without trying and was struggling with her marriage. Sophie had an on/off struggle with the fact that she was not a military "spouse" because she and her partner were not married. Each woman had different reasons for clinging to the book club, but I really liked how the author conveyed that something seemingly as small as this shared human connection really changed all of their lives.
The book opens with Adelaide calling SOS to Regina and Sophie because she needs to have a medical procedure and her husband is currently deployed. We then find out that she has tricked them into coming because Regina and Sophie had a falling out and hadn't spoken for the past 10 years. Once again Adelaide is the force that brings everyone together. Each of the ladies really needed something from the others and they did become a true family. Book club was not just book club it was "...about their relationships with themselves and the friends that supported them." (pg. 374)
There was also some super cute side story romance between each lady and her significant other. I was especially fond of Regina's burgeoning relationship with cute cake baker Henry. I could probably read a whole book about just them. 😅 Ultimately, this book was the real world pallet cleanser that I needed from the all the fantasy books I've been reading and I rated it a 3.5/5. What's your favorite book you've ever read about a book club?
Happy Reading!
